Choosing the Right Food Photography and Styling Workshop For You

photography classThere are many workshops being conducted and organized. With such a bloom in number of workshops it becomes critical to choose the right workshop. This post provides some insight on how to choose a food photography or styling workshop.

Choosing the Right Food Photography and Styling Workshop

Digital Photography School published a great article on choosing a workshop or photography class. Peter shares four things that you should do before enrolling in the class:

  1. Write Out What You Want To Learn
  2. Start Searching
  3. Check The Syllabus
  4. Review the Instructors Photos and Feedback

Read the complete article on Digital Photography School.

Checking syllabus and content of the workshop is important to manage your expectations from the workshop.

With so many food photography workshops being organized these days, it is important that you research the instructors and review their portfolio before signing up. Look for the photos and also see how long an instructor has been teaching or taking photographs. If bio is unavailable online, ask the organizers to provide one.

In past few weeks, I have come across some outstanding workshops. In my opinion, these workshops are taught by some top notch professionals in the industry.

Ongoing Food Photography and Styling Workshops

In the upcoming weeks there are some great food photography workshops being conducted near you. Here are few of them:

  1.  Digital Media Playground in San Francisco, CA – Denise Woodward has been organizing food photography workshops and great food photographers have been teaching in these workshops. Danielle Tsi will be teaching in an upcoming workshop on 26th February. Read more.
  2. Plate to Page Workshops in Europe– Meeta Khurana (Read food photography interview) from What’s For Lunch Honey, Ilva Beretta (Read food photography interview) from Lucullian Delight, Jamie Schler from Life’s a Feast and Jeanne Horak-Druiff from Cook Sister have formed a coalition and created “Plate to Page”, a series of workshops related to food photography and food writing.
  3. Real Food Styling and Photography Workshop in Long Beach, CA – Matt Armendariz (read how Matt became a food photographer) and Adam Pearson are top food photographer and food stylist. They have been teaching photography and styling and recently launched, what seems to be a regular series of photography and styling workshops.

  1. I was just introduced to one today, run by a very experienced professional editorial photographer, Tim Clinch. May be out of reach for many, but the website is very well put together and addresses several of the points you bring forward, Neel. Besides, Tim’s imagery is amazing and worth the look.

Workshops may be able to put you in contact with former participants to get their take on the sessions and what they personally gained from it.

  2. Thank you for this post!!
I’ve been looking for European workshops and didn’t find any! Please keep updating this entry if you happen to know more about it.
    Thank you!

  3. Hey! I like the concept of your site. Very helpful and informative… Maybe we can do some cross-posts?

  4. What about the International Conference on Food Styling and Photography at Boston University:

  5. Please let me know if you hear of any schools or classes in the Washington, DC area. Everything that I see is on the west coast.

  6. Workshops help tremendously with food styling and food photography. they can give a good base for techniques that can come in handy. However the best way to learn is just to start shooting. Award winning cookbook author and photographer Jim Peterson, photographer Jamie Tiempo and yours truly, Laurie Knoop teach a 3 day workshop at the Institute of Culinary Education in NY every spring and fall. Spring has happened and the dates haven’t been set yet for the fall but will let you all know.
Jim Peterson and I are also holding classes at Studio129NYC. This is a more intensive course that will go into more details then what we do at ICE. If you want more info just go to http://www.studio129nyc.com and drop me an email.
I love teaching this and I feel very strongly that if you get the styling and photography together it makes you a stronger stylist or photographer.
