Welcome to Learn Food Photography – a site for food photography and food styling enthusiasts who like to learn more about photography and styling.

We are G and Neel, the couple on the other side of your computer screen and running Learn Food Photography. Currently, we post twice a week (on Mondays and Thursdays) and write about food photography, food styling, equipment and tools, ethics and business of food photography and styling. G loves to cook the food and food styling and Neel loves food photography. Read more about us (about G coming soon) and the story behind Learn Food Photography.

About Neel

My name is Neel and I am a hobbyist food photographer. In my other life, I work as an Engineer repairing stuff that someone else broke. As far as I remember, it has been about 12 years since I picked up first used a camera. It was an old Russian 35 mm film camera – Zenit. Though it was heavy and bulky with not many lens options, that old camera was enough to draw me in to the world of photography.

In these 12 years, I have loaded lot of film rolls in several cameras, developed them and loaded another roll. Couple of years ago, like most of the photographers, I stopped loading film rolls too. These days, I plug in my memory card and download it on my laptop.

In these 12 years, I have learnt a lot and I still feel I don’t know everything about photography and cameras. So, while I may trick you to believe that I am an expert, don’t believe it. And every time I try, remind me “you are still learning, you are not an expert” :).

My Love Affair

It was just one stormy night and clouds were all over the place. With lightening cracking down our ceiling, there was absolutely nothing to do. The itch of shooting something was making me uneasy. The God of Weather or the God of Rain weren’t very happy with me. G was busy baking and then she pulled out this wonderful brownie. And that was it. I knew I have to take that photo. And I did. That photo turned out just alright. Nothing mind blowing for the first food photo.

Story Behind Learn Food Photography

I instantly knew I need improvement and I started researching. I googled and searched and researched some more. There wasn’t enough information for those who wanted to learn food photography. There were some $2000 seminars and $500 courses. For a hobbyist, that was a bit too much. So I went the frugal way. After couple of months of  research, I improved somewhat and researched some more. This is what I am still doing today – learning something new, improving a little bit and research some more.

Now, I have a stack of my notes that are getting tough to organize and keep intact. I have started converting to blog posts, I wished that’s how I would have started. So while, this blog is still young, my notes, lessons learned and mistakes made, have been with me for quite a while.

The motivation to start Learn Food Photography came from the frustration of not finding information about food photography online. In the coming months, our plan is to post more frequently and engage our readers.

  • You have a good thing going here. There is very little on food photography on the net.
    Thanks, Juan

    • Thank you for your thoughts Juan. Just trying to share what little I know or am discovering.

  • Great website – lots of very useful information!

I have just registered to receive your free eBook so I am looking forward to receiving that.

I am interested in food photography because I own the site GetMeCooking (http://www.getmecooking.com/user/paul) which allows users to submit recipes along with photographs (in fact every recipe must have at least one photograph). So I hope I’ll be able to learn some things from this site that I can use on GetMeCooking 🙂

  • I’m so glad to have stumbled upon your blog via Twitter! It’s great to see a site that caters to those of us who have the passion for food photography and styling but would prefer to learn the “frugal way”. I’m really looking forward to following and learning. Thanks so much for sharing all that you’ve taken away from your past experiences!

  • Hi Neel and G,

I was doing some online research and found your blog. I am a professional food stylist working in Southern California, and I absolutely LOVE what I do. There are many hobbyist food photographers and food bloggers these days, and it’s great that you have compiled this information to share with them. Bravo!

  • Hi Neel – just stumbled on your lovely site today and as you can see, I have been hopping all over it LOL Your site is a wonderful resource for food bloggers and as I know I will be popping over very often, I will soon be adding you to my blogroll.

Hope you have a great weekend and keep up the great and much appreciated work 🙂

  • I’m so glad to have found this site!. I’m very interested in following you, as I’d like to learn more about the styling aspect of food photography. I’m a portrait photographer as a second job, but shooting vegan foods is my passion! I want other people to know through me, how delicious plant based foods are.

My struggles though, are choosing the correct height to shoot from, for a given food, and what props if any are/should be included. I tend to do more close up shots of the food instead of a place setting. My photos should be open on my facebook, if anyone wants to take a look. Thanks again, so much!

Hi Neel. I appreciate what you’ve done with this website. Found it last night after searching for food photography help. I’m an enthusiast that got a request from a local restaurant when picking up some takeout to help him photograph some of his dishes when he found out I was a photographer. Figured to do it right I needed to get some specific help. Looks like I found the right place. BTW still working on a website!

  • May I just say what a comfort to find somebody who genuinely knows what they are talking about on the internet. You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More and more people ought to read this and understand this side of your story. I can’t believe you’re not more popular given that you surely have the gift.

  • The next time I read a blog, Hopefully it won’t disappoint me as much as this one. After all, Yes, it was my choice to read through, however I actually thought you’d have something helpful to talk about. All I hear is a bunch of crying about something that you could possibly fix if you weren’t too busy seeking attention.

  • Spot on with this write-up, I honestly believe that this web site needs a lot more attention. I’ll probably be back again to read through more, thanks for the info!

  • This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  • Oh my goodness! Incredible article dude!

  • Can I simply just say what a relief to find an individual who truly understands what they are talking about on the web. You certainly realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More and more people must read this and understand this side of the story. It’s surprising you’re not more popular because you certainly have the gift.

  • Hello! I simply want to offer you a big thumbs up for your great information you have got here on this post. I am coming back to your blog for more soon.

  • Good information. Lucky me I ran across your website by accident (stumbleupon). I’ve book marked it for later!

  • Way cool! Some very valid points! I appreciate you writing this article and the rest of the site is extremely good.

  • Good info. Lucky me I discovered your site by accident (stumbleupon). I have saved it for later!

  • It’s nearly impossible to find knowledgeable people in this particular subject, but you sound like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks

  • When I originally commented I seem to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on every time a comment is added I get 4 emails with the exact same comment. Is there a means you are able to remove me from that service? Thanks!

  • Very good write-up. I certainly appreciate this website. Keep writing!

  • A motivating discussion is definitely worth comment. I do believe that you need to write more about this issue, it may not be a taboo subject but usually folks don’t discuss these issues. To the next! Best wishes!!

  • Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
